Doctor of Law from the Ernst-Mortitz-Arndt University of Greifswald in Germany. Lawyer and Master in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure of the Diego Portales University of Chile.
Full-time professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile and Director of the Justice Studies Center of the same University. From 2010 to 2014 he worked as a researcher (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter) in the Center for Criminology and Criminal Law of the University of Greifswald-Germany directed by Prof. Frieder Dünkel. He has carried out research projects on issues related to the execution of juvenile criminal sanctions, international standards on prison conditions for adults and adolescents (2011) (2008), legal regulation of judicial control at the stage of execution of criminal sanctions (2008-2009) and Fundamental Rights of inmates (2009-2010).
Prof. Castro has published three books: Criminal Jurisprudence of the Chilean Supreme Court (2007); Fundamental Rights of inmates (2010) and Jugenstrafvollzug und Jugendstrafrecht in Chile, Peru und Bolivien unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von nationalen und internationalen Kontrollmechanismen (2016).
